Recovering from COVID-19: How Victoria Compares to the Rest of Australia

Published on 24 September 2025 at 20:20

Victoria endured some of the longest and strictest COVID-19 lockdowns in the world. The impacts were profound — socially, psychologically, and economically. Now, several years on, how is Victoria recovering compared to other states?

Mental health and wellbeing

Research shows Victorians experienced higher rates of anxiety, depression and loneliness during the 112-day lockdown in 2020, compared with other states. While wellbeing has improved since restrictions eased, studies suggest distress remained elevated longer in Victoria than elsewhere. Many people still report lingering effects — disrupted routines, strained social connections, and ongoing mental health challenges.

The positive side is that Victorians made use of mental health services at higher rates than other states, showing a willingness to reach out and seek support when needed.

Economic recovery

Economically, Victoria has bounced back strongly. Employment and investment are now above pre-pandemic levels, and sectors like construction and tech are thriving. However, industries that rely on international visitors, events, and the arts are still catching up. Financial hardship during and after lockdowns hit Victorians hard, and for some, recovery remains uneven.

Social recovery

While life feels “back to normal” for many, the social impact lingers. Extended periods of isolation took a toll on relationships and community wellbeing. Rebuilding these connections takes time, but community events, volunteerism, and local initiatives are helping to restore social cohesion.

Takeaway

Compared to other states, Victoria’s economic recovery has been strong, but its mental and social recovery is slower due to the sheer length and severity of lockdowns. The lesson is clear: just as we invested in vaccines and jobs, we must continue to invest in mental health and community rebuilding for the long term.
