You’re Not Alone.
Since the COVID-19 pandemic, social anxiety has significantly increased among Australian children and teens.
Lockdowns, remote learning, and long periods of isolation have disrupted routines and impacted emotional wellbeing - leading to more school refusal and anxiety in social situations.
Here’s what can help:• Listen without judgment - Let them feel heard, not pushed.• Encourage gently - Exposure works best in tiny, manageable steps.• Praise effort, not outcome - “You said hello today - that was really brave.”• Model calm - Kids absorb our emotional cues.• Seek professional help early - Therapy can build confidence and coping skills.
And remember, you might need support too - especially if you’re feeling burnt out, frustrated or overwhelmed. It’s okay to ask for help.
Social anxiety isn’t bad behaviour or just shyness - it’s a real struggle. With patience, support, and understanding, things can get better.
