“Why Do I React This Way?” Understanding Trauma Responses

Published on 25 August 2025 at 18:20

Have you ever snapped at someone you love, shut down completely, or felt like you had to keep everyone happy just to avoid conflict? These aren’t random behaviors—they’re trauma responses. When our nervous system feels threatened, it tends to go into Fight, Flight, Freeze, or Fawn mode, even if we’re not in actual danger.

For example, imagine a friend cancels plans at the last minute. One person might fight (lash out in anger), another might flight (avoid texts and keep busy with work), someone else might freeze (go numb and withdraw), and another might fawn (apologize or overcompensate to keep the peace). Each reaction is the body’s way of trying to feel safe.

This infographic shows not only how these responses can look and feel, but also simple, practical ways to gently bring yourself back into balance. Healing starts with awareness.
